The Elatochori ski resort sits in the Pierian Mountains above Katerini in Central Macedonia, beside the village of Elatochori, with the Olympus villages of Agios Dimitrios and Mikrolivado and the Seli resort on Vermio within reach. The trip is one of the Greece Tours on Greece Ville.
This post covers the tours nearby, where the resort lies, the village beside it, the mountain villages near it, how Seli compares and the questions that come up before booking.
What is the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort is a winter sports centre on the southeastern slopes of the Pierian Mountains in Pieria. It sits at 1,400 to 1,800 metres and opened on a trial basis in 2000, then officially in 2001.

The entry on the Pierian Mountains names the range as the site of the Elatochori ski resort. The entry on the village adds that Elatochori is known for its ski centre.
At the base of the slopes, at a spot called Papá Choráfi, stand a chalet and a dining room. Together they cover 450 square metres and take more than 400 people.
The Ski Sports and Mountaineering Association operates in the Elatochori ski resort. Its title matches a range that serves skiers and climbers alike, with two mountaineering refuges on the Pierian Mountains.
The Katerini record links the start of winter tourism in the area to the Elatochori ski resort. The bulk of the tourist infrastructure, by contrast, lies on the coast at Paralia and Olympiaki Akti.
A national tourism overview names Arachova, Kalavryta, Karpenisi and Metsovo as the main ski destinations of Greece. Elatochori does not feature among them, nor does Seli, a resort covered further down this page.
- Altitude: The slopes span 1,400 to 1,800 metres, or 4,600 to 5,900 feet.
- Opening: A trial season ran in 2000, and the official start came in 2001.
- Base buildings: A chalet and a dining room stand at Papá Choráfi.
- Operator: The Ski Sports and Mountaineering Association works in the centre.
The sections below place the Elatochori ski resort on the map, list the nearest tour formats and compare the centre with Seli, the oldest ski resort in Greece.
Which tours reach the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort has no tour of its own on sale. No listed format names Elatochori, Agios Dimitrios, Mikrolivado or Seli, so the boxes on this page show the nearest listed formats, on Mount Olympus and the Pieria coast.
None of these formats is a ski tour. They do not visit the Elatochori ski resort, do not climb the Pierian Mountains and do not include snow sports of any kind.
One format is a tour on Olympus, inside Pieria, built around nature, history and local tradition. It treats the mountain as landscape and heritage, not as a ski area.
A second format is a day trip that starts in Thessaloniki and visits Dion and the Mount Olympus park. It joins an ancient site with the protected zone of the mountain.
A third format is an olive oil tasting held in a grove in the Olympus area of Pieria. A fourth is a buggy safari that sets out from Paralia Katerinis towards Olympus.
For a winter visit, the Elatochori ski resort stays a separate trip from Katerini, outside every listed format. The four formats cover the Olympus side of Pieria and its coast instead.
- Olympus heritage tour: Nature, history and local tradition on the Pieria side of Olympus.
- Dion and Olympus day trip: A Thessaloniki departure that pairs Dion with the Mount Olympus park.
- Olive oil tasting: A tasting in an olive grove in the Olympus area of Pieria.
- Buggy safari: An off-road outing from Paralia Katerinis towards Olympus.
The tour cards and availability boxes on this page list live dates for each format. A Mount Olympus day trip covers the mountain side of Pieria in more depth.
Where is the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort lies in the Pierian Mountains, a range between Imathia, Pieria and the Kozani region of Central Macedonia, Greece. Its village sits west of Katerini, the administrative and economic centre of the Pieria regional unit.
The range rises south of Kampania, the plain of the lower Aliakmon. It reaches into the southern part of Imathia, south of the river, and runs on into Pieria.
The Pieria regional unit borders Imathia to the north and Kozani to the west, and the Pierian Mountains lie on its western side. Katerini, on the Pierian plain, sits at only 14 metres.
The highest point of the range is Flampouro, at 2,193 metres. The top of the Elatochori ski resort, at 1,800 metres, sits close to 400 metres lower than that summit.
Two mountaineering refuges stand in the range, at 1,000 and 1,680 metres. Vergina, home to the archaeological site of ancient Aigai, stands at the foot of the range.
The range carries a sober record. On 17 December 1997, a Yakovlev Yak-42 flying from Odesa to Thessaloniki crashed in the Pierian Mountains near Olympus, and 70 passengers and crew died, 41 of them Greek.
- Range: The Pierian Mountains, between Imathia, Pieria and the Kozani region.
- Summit: Flampouro, the highest point of the range, at 2,193 metres.
- Refuges: Two mountaineering refuges, at 1,000 and 1,680 metres.
- Plain: Kampania spreads to the north of the range, along the lower Aliakmon.
The Elatochori ski resort therefore belongs to the Pierian range, a mountain apart from Olympus, with its own summit, refuges and forests of beech, oak, chestnut and pine.
What is the village beside the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort takes its name from Elatochori, a mountain village of the Katerini municipality on the Pierian Mountains. The 2021 census recorded 447 inhabitants in the village, and the wider community covers 38.872 square kilometres of land.
Before the 2011 local government reform, Elatochori was a municipal district of Pierioi. The Kallikratis reform then merged six former municipalities, Pierioi among them, into the present municipality of Katerini.
Pierioi now serves as a municipal unit of Katerini, with its former seat at Ritini. It recorded 1,656 residents at the 2021 census and spans 112.943 square kilometres.
The village entry gives two distances for the trip to the slopes. One line places the Elatochori ski resort 6 km from Elatochori, while the ski centre section gives 8 km.
Records describe Elatochori as a mountainous village on the Pierian Mountains. Veria, the capital of Imathia, lies to its north, and the city of Katerini lies to its east.
Elatochori forms a small part of a large municipality: Katerini counted 82,891 people at the 2021 census, with 59,189 of them living inside the city limits.
- Municipality: Katerini, in the Pieria regional unit of Central Macedonia.
- Former district: Pierioi, whose seat stood at Ritini.
- Population: 447 inhabitants at the 2021 census.
- Slopes: The Elatochori ski resort lies 6 to 8 km from the village.
Elatochori belongs to the Pierian side of Pieria. A Litochoro tour covers the Olympus side of the same regional unit, where the town stands on the eastern flank of the mountain.
Which villages share the Katerini municipality with the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort shares the Katerini municipality with villages of the former Petra municipality. Agios Dimitrios recorded 520 inhabitants in 2021, Kato Milia 776 and Ano Milia only 19, and all three joined Katerini in the 2011 reform.
Agios Dimitrios forms a village and a community within Katerini, the municipality that also holds the Elatochori ski resort. Before 2011 it was a municipal district of Petra, with 520 people at the 2021 census.
Petra itself now forms a municipal unit of Katerini. It covers 219.318 square kilometres, recorded 4,225 residents in 2021 and once had its seat at Mesaia Milia.
Kato Milia and Ano Milia both belong to the community of Milia. Ano Milia counted 62 people in 1940, 43 in 1991 and 55 in 2001, before falling to 19.
Ano Milia keeps the ruins of a tower of the Lazas family, klephts and armatoles of the late Ottoman period. A monument raised by the local municipality stands near the ruins.
Near the village entrance lie the ruins of the church of Saint Athanasius, set on fire by the Axis in 1943. Partial restoration followed in 2018, with the first liturgy there in 75 years.
- Agios Dimitrios: A community of Katerini with 520 inhabitants in 2021.
- Kato Milia: The larger of the two Milia villages, with 776 inhabitants.
- Ano Milia refuge: The mountaineering club of Katerini has a refuge at 1,050 metres for 62 people.
- Saint Cosmas cross: Tradition links a metal cross in a tree near a small church to Saint Cosmas of Aetolia in 1763.
Together with Elatochori, these villages show the rural side of the Katerini municipality, which also takes in the coast at Paralia and Olympiaki Akti.
How does Seli compare with the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort is far younger than Seli, where the first ski lift in Greece went up in 1934, which makes it the oldest ski resort in the country. Seli lies in the Vermio Mountains, 20 km from Veria.
Seli appears in records as Kato Vermio, a community of the Veria municipality. The village went by Kato Seli until 1926, and its Aromanian name is Selia de Jos, or simply Selia.
The village stands at 1,450 metres, and records rank it as the highest populated village in Greece. That height falls inside the altitude band of the Elatochori ski resort.
Seli recorded 268 residents in 2021, fewer than the 447 of Elatochori. In summer its population rises to 3,000, and winters there are very cold and snowy by Greek standards.
The Vermio range also holds a second ski area, Tria Pente Pigadia, listed as 3-5 Pigadia near Naousa. The Vermio lies west of the Kampania plain, while the Pierian Mountains rise south of the same plain.
Seli is primarily an Aromanian, or Vlach, village. Mikrolivado, a village of the Grevena municipality, shares that heritage: the Grevena diocese described it in 1904 as Vlach, with 15 families.
- Seli opening: The first ski lift in Greece went up there in 1934.
- Elatochori opening: The Elatochori ski resort opened officially in 2001.
- Thessaloniki distance: Seli lies 90 km from Thessaloniki.
- Mikrolivado: Alan Wace and Maurice Thompson found older residents speaking Aromanian there in 1911.
From Veria, Provincial Road 2 runs west towards Kato Vermio, the village of Seli, and Provincial Road 7 runs south towards Katerini. A Veria tour covers the town where both roads begin.
What do travellers ask about the Elatochori ski resort?
The Elatochori ski resort raises four recurring questions from travellers: its distance from Katerini, the winter weather on its slopes, the trees that cover the Pierian Mountains, and how it compares with Parnassos, the largest ski centre in Greece.
How far is the Elatochori ski resort from Katerini?
The village entry places the Elatochori ski resort 36 km from the city of Katerini, while the Katerini entry gives 33.4 km from the city centre. Katerini lies 68 km from Thessaloniki and sits on the A1/E75 motorway, with Intercity and suburban trains on the main Athens to Thessaloniki line.
What winter weather reaches the Elatochori ski resort?
Records describe harsh winter weather as common in central and western Pieria, above all in the Pierian Mountains and on Olympus. Down on the plain, Katerini has a humid subtropical climate, with dry summers and cool, more humid winters. Pieria as a whole has a mainly Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cool winters.
Which trees grow around the Elatochori ski resort?
The Pierian Mountains carry dense forests of beech, oak and chestnut, with black and red pines, while shrubs and deciduous trees cover the lowest levels. The range is also known for rare wild flowers. Beech spreads there as a broad zone, whereas on Olympus it appears only in small clusters.
How does the Elatochori ski resort compare with Parnassos?
The Parnassos ski centre, with its two main areas of Kelaria and Fterrolakas, ranks as the largest in Greece. It has 19 runs totalling 36 km and a top elevation of 2,250 metres. Its base, at 1,600 metres, sits inside the altitude band of the Elatochori ski resort, which tops out at 1,800 metres.
